About Alex Hamilton

“Alex Hamilton is a Melbourne-based Australian artist whose drawings combine a lyrical yet structured use of colour and line, creating compositions that pulse with energy and rhythm. Aesthetically intriguing and rich with illusionary play, his works reveal hidden layers within the static urban environments they depict. Through his unique visual language, Hamilton invites viewers to look beyond surface reality - to discover coded meanings, subliminal tones, and alternate perspectives that challenge conventional ways of seeing.

By breaking traditional associations of space and orientation, Hamilton’s intersecting lines and free-flowing shapes transport us into a world that feels both futuristic and familiar. His art suggests that beneath the everyday lies a deeper rhythm — one that connects our physical surroundings with unseen emotional and sensory dimensions.”

Taken from gallery information sheets about my work, then fed through Chat GPT, the above text also reflects my interest in digital screen culture and the embedded institutional belief systems of the mediums we use in our day to day lives.   Using repurposed perspex strips, (particulates of which are proving lethal to personkind’s health), I “enframe” the 1st layer of painting on a surface, with a semitranslucent perspex surface painted on both sides leaving a gap between the 2.  I see this “enframement” as a parallel to the screen surfaces on our devices.   We don’t notice these surfaces even when they have accretions of dust and food spills, which in our distracted or contemplative moments as users or learners, we scrape off and push around in consonance with, or perhaps just remembering, the process of making hand generated marks and images.

Since the mid-1980s, Hamilton has exhibited internationally, presenting solo shows most notably in London and New York, and contributing to institutional exhibitions at Edith Cowan University (Perth, 2017), Millennium Gallery (Sheffield, 2017), Kunsthalle Exnergasse (Vienna, 2011), and Tate Britain (London, 2006). His work has also been featured at major international art fairs including Art Basel (2018), Art Rotterdam (2018), TEFAF (2017), Art Chicago (2006), Drawing Now Paris (numerous years since 2010), and Sydney Contemporary (2024).

Hamilton’s drawings are represented in prestigious public and private collections worldwide, including the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of South Australia, Saatchi Collection, Victoria & Albert Museum, Tate Library, Baltimore Museum of Modern Art, Denver Museum of Modern Art, and various collections across Europe, Australia, and the United States.
